Huntington, Indiana - Republican state representative candidate Ron Fusselman took issue with Republican Dan Leonard’s vote against property tax cap legislation on Monday, and questioned why he is opposed to putting the issue before a referendum in November.
"Protecting taxpayers is fundamental to strong, representative leadership. It is disturbing to hear that Rep. Dan Leonard voted against providing this basic protection," said Fusselman. "What concerns me the most is that this action indicates that he is not interested in hearing taxpayers’ opinions on the property tax cap legislation; otherwise, he would have allowed the issue to be put before a referendum. Once again, Rep. Leonard has put special interest groups and his personal interests above the voter's interests.”
Fusselman also noted the potential positive effect the tax caps could have on economic development.
"By permanently capping property taxes, we position Indiana to attract new homeowners, and ultimately new businesses," Fusselman said. "Seeing protection from excessive taxing could be the deciding factor for numerous individuals and companies looking to relocate to Northeasten Indiana. At the end of the day, property tax caps help position us as a viable, attractive community for more families and growing businesses, and that’s what our community needs."
